Being this bad isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
The 2020 Boston Red Sox are really, really bad. They dropped to 12-26 with a 6-2 10-inning loss to the Blue Jays at Fenway Park on Thursday.
With a .316 winning percentage, Boston is on pace to go 19-41 for this shortened 60-game season.
Only 12 Red Sox teams in the franchise’s 120-year history have finished with a winning percentage below .400. Only three Red Sox teams have finished with a winning percentage below .316. It happened in 1932 (.279), 1926 (.301) and 1925 (.309).
Comparing the 2020 team’s winning percentage to those other clubs’ winning percentages isn’t exactly a true representation considering this season consists of only 60 games.
But many thought an abbreviated 60-game schedule potentially could work in Boston’s favor. As MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo wrote June 28, “For the Red Sox, a 60-game schedule presents opportunity to hide warts that would have plagued them if the full season was played.”
Being this terrible certainly isn’t terrible looking ahead to the 2021 MLB Draft. Two potential aces sit at the top of the draft board. Vanderbilt righty Kumar Rocker is projected to go No. 1 overall.
Jack Leiter, another righty from Vanderbilt who’s the son of former major league pitcher Al Leiter, is projected to go No. 2 overall.
The Red Sox won’t necessarily receive the No. 1 or No. 2 pick if they finish with one of the two worst winning percentages for 2020.
The order of the MLB Draft in a normal year is determined by reverse standings. The team with the worst record the previous season receives the No. 1 pick. The team with the second worst record receives the No. 2 pick. But commissioner Rob Manfred has the ability to modify the 2021 MLB Draft order because the season is fewer than 81 games.
Manfred could use a lottery system or determine the order based on combined winning percentages over the past two or three seasons.
Boston Globe’s Alex Speier reported Monday that “the process for determining draft order still hasn’t been decided.”
Baseball America also reported that same day “sources believe nothing will change in terms of how the draft order is determined” and “a final decision on the order will likely not be announced any time soon.”
All Red Sox fans can do right now is hope for losses and cross their fingers for the draft order to go in reverse order of the 2020 standings.
The Red Sox have received a top-10 overall pick only six times in franchise history. They have received a top-five overall pick only three times. Their highest pick ever came in 1967 when they drafted Mike Garman third overall.
The Red Sox right now have the second worst winning percentage in the majors behind only the Pittsburgh Pirates (11-24, .314 winning percentage).
Race for last place:
30. Pirates 11-24, (.314)
29. Red Sox 12-26 (316)
28. Angels 13-25 (.342)
27. Nationals 12-23 (.343)
26. Rangers 13-23 (.361)
25. Royals 14-24 (.368)
24. Diamondbacks 14-23 (.378)
23. Mariners 15-22 (.405)
The Red Sox are going to try to win every time they step onto the field for their remaining 22 games. These players don’t care about 2021 Draft position. But at this point, it’s better off if they lose all 22 games.
Worst teams in Red Sox history
1932: 43-111 record (.279 winning percentage)
1926: 46-107 record (.301 winning percentage)
1925: 47-105 record (.309 winning percentage)
2020: 12-26 record (.316 winning percentage)
1906: 49-105 record (.318 winning percentage)
1927: 51-103 record (.331 winning percentage)
1930: 52-102 record (.338 winning percentage)
