Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Wednesday that President Trump should clarify his denunciation of white supremacist groups, which came across as muddled during Tuesday night’s first presidential debate.
McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said he agrees with Sen. Tim Scott, one of three black senators, who said Trump misspoke and “should correct it.”
“He said it was unacceptable not to condemn white supremacists,” McConnell said of Scott’s response. “And so I do so in the strongest possible way.”
Scott, a South Carolina Republican, told reporters earlier Tuesday it appeared Trump misspoke during the debate when questioned about whether he would denounce white supremacist groups.
“If he doesn't correct it, I guess he didn't misspeak,” Scott said.
McConnell said he aligned himself with Scott.
“I think he said it exactly correctly, and that's exactly how I would express myself on that issue,” McConnell said.
Trump was asked by moderator Chris Wallace to denounce white supremacist groups.
Trump told Wallace “sure,” and he added that he would condemn white supremacist groups but also left-wing groups, including antifa, that have been rioting in cities across America, burning and looting businesses and perpetuating violence.
When Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden asked Trump to condemn the Proud Boys, a white supremacist group, Trump said, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the Left.”
