World No.1 Novak Djokovic had to exit the US Open 2020 in an unusual way after he was defaulted by the US Open supervisor as he smacked a ball after losing a service game that went on to hit the line judge in the throat.

Djokovic was playing Pablo Carreno Busta in the 4th round of the US Open. The Serbian was broken at 6-5 effectively giving Carreno Busta a chance to serve for the set. In a fit of frustration, Djokovic hit a spare ball too hard which went and hit the line judge.

Former British No.1 Greg Rusedski insists Novak Djokovic should have taken responsibility for his actions

Former British No.1 and Grand Slam finalist Greg Rusedski was in favor of the decision to default the World No.1. Greg also slammed Djokovic for not taking responsibility for his actions and not apologizing by sitting for a press conference.

“Unbelievable that @DjokerNole has been defaulted. This was the correct decision under the rules regardless of intent or not. Novak should have stayed for the press conference  & apologize. We must take responsibility for our actions no matter how difficult the situation is.” Rusedski tweeted

Djokovic was visibly frustrated in the match. At 5-4 Djokovic had 3 set points on Carreno Busta’s serve. But he failed to convert any of them and then for the first time in the match showed his frustration by slamming a spare ball on the side of the court. In the next game, Djokovic was broken, further escalating his frustration, Djokovic took a spare ball out of his pocket and hit it a little too hard which sadly went on to hit the line judge in the throat.

After the incident, the US Open match referee, supervisor, and the chair umpire had a lengthy discussion regarding the issue. Later Djokovic pleaded his innocence in the incident but it didn’t shift the referee who made the decision to default the Serbian after discussions with the supervisor and the chair umpire.
