Miami Heat rookie Tyler Herro has been a big-time shot taker and maker for his team in Orlando, and a key reason why the Heat is in the Conference Finals.

Herro also faced quite a bit of adversity when the 2019-20 NBA season was suspended due to COVID-19.

The former Kentucky star had just been getting over a nagging leg injury when play was suspended. Shortly thereafter, Herro contracted the virus.

Tyler Herro explained his harrowing experience in a recent story by Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press:

“I was sick for a week or two,” Herro said. “My chest was hurting really bad. I had it right when the season shut down.”

Of course, a number of NBA players tested positive almost immediately after the shutdown, so Herro was hardly alone. Nevertheless, his experience serves notice to the uncertainty in the aftermath of the shutdown.

The Heat are certainly glad to have Herro’s services.

Herro has emerged as yet another playmaker for a Heat team suddenly full of scoring options. He is averaging 14.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists in these playoffs, and also shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc on 6.1 attempts per game. Miami will most certainly need Herro’s pure stroke against the Celtics.

Boston has defended the three exceptionally well throughout the playoffs, and they also rank first in defensive rating by quite a wide margin.

Herro has taken on a large role as a rookie. He has persisted through a bout with COVID-19. Now, Herro will look to take it to another level as the Heat look for their first NBA Finals berth since 2014.
