Opinion/Letter: Correct the mistake on Nov. 3 - Opinion - seacoastonline.com - Portsmouth, NH - Seacoastonline.com

To the Editor:

The over 180,000 Americans who have died from COVID-19 are symptomatic of Donald Trump's failures and the damage that has resulted, not only to the American people, but to the world.

His replacing competent government officials with incompetent lackeys makes choosing a career in public service dangerous. Rebuilding effective government may take many years.

His demonstrating that the United States cannot be counted on to cooperate with the rest of the world to protect the environment, to deal with global health problems, to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons, or to facilitate international commerce, may take decades to overcome.

Rather than making America great, his denying the existence of problems and failure to invest more in education, health care, infrastructure, and research has put this country onto a downward trajectory.

By electing an inexperienced and incompetent leader with the wisdom and emotional maturity of a 5-year-old, American voters have cast doubt about the very notion that democracy can be an effective approach to governance.

We will have an opportunity to correct that mistake in November.
