Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis deployed a wide range of state resources to respond to the Wednesday night collapse of a condo in Miami-Dade County that's left at least one person dead and dozens missing.
DeSantis said officails are “bracing” for more deaths as workers dig through the rubble of Champlain Towers in Surfside, a tiny beach town just north of Miami Beach. Of the building’s 135 units, more than 50 collapsed during the overnight implosion, officials said.
“The TV does not do it justice,” DeSantis said during a news conference Thursday near the condo. “It is really, really traumatic to see.”
The state Division of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie said officials from the Division of State Fire Marshal, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Department of Economic Opportunity and the Florida Department of Transportation are all on the scene supporting county and city officials.
“This is the incredible, unimaginable situation no one could have predicted,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at the news conference. “But we have the right people on the ground.”
DeSantis did not take questions from reporters, and walked away from the event as he was asked how many people are missing and whether any foul play is suspected.
Miami-Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman told CBS Miami that 51 residents of the building are not yet accounted for.
DeSantis told reporters that search-and-rescue crews are on the ground, and they will soon begin the process of determining what happened.
“I know they will have engineers to look at this to try and figure out what happened ... I know you won’t have those answers immediately,” he said.
Cava, who said the building was located in a predominantly Jewish community, said resources are also in place for those who survived the collapse but are now displaced.
“Not only are they getting hotel rooms, they are getting help with their medicine, with blankets and clothing, because of course there they are with nothing,” she said.
