A historic proposal that would crown group champions in football for the first time was formally introduced to the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s general membership on Monday, moving one step closer to a move that has been debated and discussed for years.

The proposal, which preserves Thanksgiving games and would still end the season during the first weekend in December, was introduced virtually at the NJSIAA’s Annual Meeting on Monday.

Member schools have until 4 p.m. Wednesday to submit their vote and the results could be unveiled as soon as this week, the NJSIAA said.

“The goal was to have a group champion in football without negatively impacting the other 98 percent of the schools,” Westwood athletic director Dan Vivino, who presented the proposal alongside Marlboro athletic director Dave Ryden said. “We believe we accomplished that. We wanted to preserve Thanksgiving, which we’ve done. We wanted to keep the calendar start and end dates the same.”

Under this proposal, there will be a 10-game maximum regular season for all schools. Public schools will play their group finals in Week 14 — the week after Thanksgiving. Non-Public schools would play their group finals in Week 13, but if either team has a Thanksgiving game planned, the final will be played the same week as the public group finals.

The NJSIAA published week-by-week graphic explainers for both public and non-public teams and they can be found at the bottom of this story.

“The best thing about this plan so far is that it has really united the state of New Jersey in football,” Ryden said. “All five leagues have come together along with the Football Coaches Association to come up with this plan that we think if going to benefit the state and high school football in New Jersey.”

In January, the NJSIAA’s general membership voted to eliminate a line from its constitution that prohibited football from playing down to group champions, a key step in moving this proposal forward.

That prohibition had stood since 1932, and if this proposal passes, group champions will be crowned in New Jersey for the first time in 2022 — exactly 90 years later.

“Three years ago, we had 40 teams playing the week after Thanksgiving,” Vivino said. “This plan will have 10, so we’ve really come a long way in shortening the season, yet also increasing what’s going on during the season and not taking games away from student athletes.”
