CHRIS FOY: Raul Jimenez can have no complaints about silly sending off against Manchester City, while VAR was CORRECT in not overruling Jon Moss' decision to award controversial handball against Wolves
- Raul Jimenez was sent off for two bookable offences in first half added time
- Manchester City felt they were denied a penalty just before the interval
- They did get a spot-kick after half time, which Raheem Sterling converted
- Wolves were left aggrieved by the decision as they felt that it was not handball
Wolves felt seriously hard done by at the Etihad yesterday with a big penalty call and a red card going against them. Former Premier League ref Chris Foy runs his eye over those talking points.
Jimenez red card
Raul Jimenez can have no complaints. The booking was silly for a lunge at Rodri which Jon Moss was entitled to punish with a card.
But then to not withdraw the required distance at the subsequent free-kick was astonishing having just been booked. Moss was left with no choice (left). I doubt anyone had complaints about that.

No City penalty
City’s players were adamant they should have been awarded a penalty before half-time for handball against defender Max Kilman, who leaned in to the ball but had his arms down by his side.
VAR Andre Marriner looked — and decided that the ball had struck Kilman in the green zone, so above the bottom of the armpit, effectively the very top of the arm. It’s therefore not a penalty.

City penalty
This was one of those classic cases of clear and obvious error. Moss pointed to the spot for handball against Joao Moutinho (right) as he jumped to cut out a cross.
Moutinho’s arm was up and you can absolutely see why Jon gave it. Moutinho was adamant the ball had hit his armpit though TV pictures suggested the ball may have brushed the arm. It wasn’t clear. And that’s the point. There wasn’t enough evidence to suggest a clear and obvious error.
Had it not been given in the first place, that decision would not have been reversed either.
