Keep an eye on Yairo Muñoz, who singled off closer Brandon Workman during the Boston Red Sox’s intrasquad game Sunday at Fenway Park. He could be an important member of the Red Sox organization in the coming years.

The Red Sox signed the 25-year-old to a minor league deal March 25 and he’s under team control through the 2024 season.

He spent the past three years in the Cardinals organization after the Oakland Athletics traded him to St. Louis for Stephen Piscotty.

But he abruptly left 2020 spring training camp after a hamstring injury and a dispute with the Cardinals over playing time. He left camp and returned to the Dominican Republic without telling the Cardinals.

St. Louis released him March 7.

He appeared in 196 big league games the past two seasons, batting .273 with a .331 on-base percentage, .391 slugging percentage, .723 OPS, 10 homers, one triple, 23 doubles, 55 RBIs, 13 stolen bases and 59 runs (510 plate appearances).

“He’s a really good offensive bat,” Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. “That’s, I think., the main thing about him. I know St. Louis really liked his bat. And then the advantage is he can move all around (the infield). And he plays all the outfield spots. So you have a guy that offensively, if he’s swinging well, you know you can stick him in there defensively to fill in some spots. And you know he’s going to do a good job, but he’s going to continue to swing the bat.”

He made starts at second, third and shortstop as well as all three outfield positions for St. Louis the past two years.

“I don’t know all the circumstances with that (why he left Cardinals camp),” Roenicke said. “I think we’re just seeing him as a player we got from another team that we like. And I think any time you go to a different spot (new organization), you’re starting new. And the opportunities are there. So that’s how I’m approaching this — is that we’ve got a player from somebody else that has proved that he can hit. And we’ll see what we have.”
