Do you really want to like that tweet?
After Twitter labeled 300,000 tweets for election-related misinformation between Oct. 27 and Nov. 11, the social media giant announced a new way to help users scrutinize the information they want to share. If you tap the like button on a tweet that contains disputed information, Twitter will alert you to that fact before you can continue.

“Giving context on why a labeled Tweet is misleading under our election, COVID-19, and synthetic and manipulated media rules is vital,” Twitter says. “These prompts helped decrease Quote Tweets of misleading information by 29% so we're expanding them to show when you tap to like a labeled Tweet.”
Prior to the election, Twitter added a pop-up window when people tried to re-tweet an article without having clicked on the link, in a bid to slow down the spread of misinformation. The pop-up asked them if they wanted to read the article before re-tweeting, but allowed them to post whether or not they did so. Twitter says the move resulted in 40 percent more article opens.
The like button pop-ups roll out globally on the web and iOS this week. Look for it on Android in the weeks to come.
