It’s been four weeks filled with espionage, near murder, and air travel but we’re finally at the end of The Flight Attendant. Between Megan’s (Rosie Perez) spying antics, Annie’s (Zosia Mamet) secret phones, and the literal assassin hunting Cassie (Kaley Cuoco), there are a dozen questions riding on this finale. But according to series developer and executive producer Steve Yockey, there’s only one question you need to keep in mind. Spoilers ahead for The Flight Attendant Episodes 1 through 8.
Most of this HBO Max original has been divided between two realities. There’s the actual world where Cassie has to deal with the consequences of waking up next to her murdered one-night stand (Michiel Huisman). And then there’s Cassie’s “mind palace,” a representation of her inner anxiety and stress that takes the form of Cassie often arguing with the departed Alex. As is often the case when it comes to trippy shows that personify mental anguish, that mind palace is the most important to this show’s ultimate meaning.
In Episode 4, Cassie tells the fictional Alex that she thinks she may be falling in love with him. Objectively, that admission of love is weird. At this point Cassie knows very little about Alex other than that he was a hot guy at her hotel. She has yet to discover Alex’s connections to the nefarious Lionfish, that he had a hand in smuggling weapons, and that he has a chronological Playboy collection that would make a serial killer nod in approval. So does Cassie really love Alex?
“I will tell you that the question is directly answered from his mouth in the finale of the series,” Yockey teased. “Literally, you just asked the correct question, in my mind. And you will get an answer to that.”
Throughout this entire season we’ve seen Cassie’s mind palace alter multiple times. It’s taken the form of a vodka-covered dance floor when she was at her lowest and most self-hating, and it’s even rewritten her memories. As Cassie is forced to deal with real life more and more she comes to understand that her beloved memories with her late father were all tainted by alcohol and abuse. It’s become more and more apparent that Cassie’s fictional version of Alex is an extension of how she sees herself.
The answer is, of course, no. Cassie was never really in love with Alex. The series ends with Cassie preparing for yet another flight. While she has a moment to herself she revisits her mind palace. As she explores each room, the lights shut off behind her and the previous room disappears. Cassie has finally found a healthy way to process her trauma instead of internalizing it as she has done so many other times in the past. She doesn’t love Alex. She’s finally starting to love herself. As thrilling and ambitious as this miniseries it, its developer only wants viewers to have fun with his series. “I just really hope that they fall in love with Cassie. I hope that they enjoy the ride,” Yockey said.
