If you’re the type who likes looking ahead to the future even though a Bears kick-off is less than a half-hour away, then this post is for you.
Because even though Sunday’s slate of games possess the potential to have wide-ranging impact across the board, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero dropped a news bomb on us this morning:
The NFL is expected to add a 17th game to the regular season in 2021, sources say. A look at how the dramatic move will change the landscape of the season, along with what it means for the salary cap.

This isn’t much of a surprise to anyone. Adding a 17th game has been on the horizon since the new CBA gained approval last March. It even came up in discussion 11 days ago at the most recent league meetings. So while the league might’ve wanted to add it immediately, the patience play appears to have panned out.
We can tackle the long-term ramifications of a 17th game. But first, this:
“The cap is still likely to drop significantly in 2021, per sources, but the 17th game as part of a new media deal could boost it above that $175 million floor. The union’s share of all revenue already was set to bump up from 47 percent to 48 percent in 2021, and the move to 17 games with a new media deal triggers a “media kicker” on top of it that further increases players’ share.”
Considering the Bears are really up against it from a cap perspective, every little bit helps. So I now find myself rooting for a major media deal. One that could help soften the blow of a reduced salary cap now, but help boost the big picture later.
Should the cap drop isn’t as significant as once feared, it could help Chicago retain some of its top talent. Whether it’s Allen Robinson, whose extension is something we have been discussing since December 2019. Or Mitchell Trubisky, who suddenly is playing for a hefty pay day.
