I was glad to see Ed Donmoyer’s letter “Happy Birthday, America” published on the CORRECT date of the Second Continental Congress unanimously passed the resolution declaring our Independence from the United Kingdom: July 2, 1776.
So what actually happened on July 4th of 1776? The final revision of the written justification for the July 2nd vote was adopted by the Congress and was signed by President of the Continental Congress John Hancock, and Secretary of the Continental Congress Charles Thomson. The other members started signing on August 2, 1776.
