A home cook has wowed the internet with a 'mind blowing' video of himself using a sifter in a very unusual way to strain his pasta.
The man, believed to be from the UK, shared a now-viral TikTok video demonstrating the 'wrong' and 'correct' methods of draining the cooking water in the sink.
The result shows the drained pasta remaining inside the hot pot while the empty sifter is put aside after emptying out the water.
Instead of transferring the penne from a pan to a colander (left), the man covers the pot with the sifter, inverted-side down, and then pours out all the boiling water through the sieve while holding the strainer and pot together over the sink (right)
'How you've probably been doing it all your life,' the man said while showing the 'wrong' method of pouring cooked pasta directly into the sifter like most people do.
'How it was made to be used,' he said while demonstrating the 'correct' way of covering the pot with strainer before draining.
The man said the 'life hack' just 'makes life easier', saying 'I usually cook a lot of pasta in one go so doing it this way puts less strain on your wrist.'
The video has since been viewed more than 285,000 times, with the captions: 'Tell the truth, you didn't know about this.'
Many were amazed by the 'mind blowing' revelation, saying: 'I was today years old when I learnt this' - but not everyone agrees with the 'correct' method.

'I'm so gonna be doing this now, why have I never thought about this before,' one woman said, while another added: 'I think you've just changed my life.'
Another man explained: 'You put pasta into the sieve then place sieve in pot to let the water drain. You don't need to keep holding the pot while water drains.'
Others quickly pointed out the man's method was 'wrong' because he was meant to use a colander, instead of a sifter, while some said he 'overcooked' his pasta.
'That's not how it should be done. It's a way. In fact you should use a colander not a sieve,' one said, while another added: 'Why use a sieve? All the starch gets stuck.... you're doing it wrong.'
A chef also weighed in on the video, saying: 'As a chef I would use a colander for pasta and this isn't how you should be using a sieve.'
Another person added: 'Before teaching others how to strain pasta with the wrong tool you might wanna learn how to cook the pasta.'
Some home cooks said the trick only works if you have a perfectly fitting strainer and pot combination.
'It only works when you strainer and out are the same size,' one person said.
