Electile dysfunction: How the United States is really the Divided States of America - The Times of India Blog

Indian voter ran into three Americans on their way to vote. “Say, how goes it? Isn’t your election on November 3?” he asked. “It is. But we can vote weeks early,” said the Republican. Indian: “What if a candidate dies before E-day? Does your Election Commission countermand the polls?” Republican: What is an Election Commission? Democrat: What is countermand? Independent: No countermand. Dead people are allowed to remain on ballot; election campaign goes on; and sometimes we elect dead people to office. Indian: You are kidding, right? All three Americans: No we are not. Independent: We once elected a dead Senator 37 days after he died in an air crash. Democrat: Yeah, his wife sat in for him in the Senate. Republican: And the man who was defeated by the dead candidate went on to become a White House cabinet member.

Independent: We once elected to the state legislature in Nevada a brothel owner weeks after he had died. Are we a great country or what? Indian: Weird! So how come you don’t have an Election Commission? Who makes the rules and enforces them? Republican: We don’t have rules. We make up rules as we go. Democrat: Yeah. Any party in power in the states gets to make its own rules. Indian: So every state has different rules for the same election? Independent: Yeah! So much fun! Even counties have their own rules. Like in this election, some counties have only one drop-off station for absentee ballots. Others have dozens of drop-offs. Some counties have drive-through voting and some do not.

Republican: And in some states you can vote in person after showing your driver’s licence as ID. Democrat: And in some states your signature has to match what’s on record. Republican: And in some states, mail-in ballots should be post-marked before Election Day and votes should be counted on Election Day. Democrat: And in some states, mail-in ballots can be counted several days after the election. Independent: And if there is any dispute it goes to the courts where a Republican-appointed judge will rule in favour of Republicans and a Democratic-appointed judge will rule in favour of Democrats.
