Losing can do strange things to young quarterbacks.
Daniel Jones is young (23), a quarterback and doing all sorts of losing. He is 1-14 in his past 15 starts. Someone entrusted with working with Jones on a daily basis sees no sign of him losing confidence, losing hope or losing it entirely.
“I’m really not worried about it with him,’’ Giants quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski said on Tuesday. “He’s so resilient.
“Unfortunately, sometimes younger guys when they’re playing and they’re playing early, they take some lumps. But by no means do I think he’s shell-shocked. He’s trying to do the best he can on every play. I haven’t seen anything that would give me concern for that.’’
Given that the Giants are 0-5 and Jones is the NFL’s 32nd-rated quarterback (70.6), stating he is not “shell-shocked’’ is not as bad a backhanded compliment as it appears.
“I love the way he goes about his work,’’ Schuplinski said. “I love the way he pays attention to detail on everything we tell him to do and we’re working with him on. He has made progress in areas in a lot of ways. His ball is coming out pretty fast. He’s really good at his communication up at the line of scrimmage with those guys and trying to get things organized. He’s done a good job of mixing up some snap counts and some cadences. I think the accuracy has been pretty good. He’s done better with decision-making. The last game, he probably had 4-5 plays where he got rid of the ball when it was a breakdown. There was one down in the red zone he just threw out of the back of the end zone. There’s another one on the sprint-out he just threw out of the way. I think that progress has been good to see from him.’’
WR Austin Mack was signed off the practice squad and WR Damion Ratley was waived off the roster. Ratley was claimed off waivers from the Browns on Sept. 6 and had four catches for 63 yards in five games. He did not have a catch against the Cowboys and was called for an offensive pass interference penalty that nullified a 31-yard touchdown catch by Darius Slayton.
“The problem was, Damion was actually running a route,’’ receivers coach Tyke Tolbert said. “He was supposed to let Slayton clear. As he was running his route he went inside and the guy who was covering Slayton ran into him. Coach [Joe] Judge says all the time, ‘It’s not what it is, it’s what it looks like,’ and it looks like he’s trying to pick the guy when he’s actually not. The intent was to run a route. There just happened to be a collision there and the officials, they made the call and it was the right call.’’
Tolbert said he thinks Sterling Shepard (turf toe), who is eligible to come off injured reserve this week, is “very close’’ to returning.
