A mother of two, I was so pleased to open my paper and see The Day’s editorial, “Senate should act, end vaccine exemption,” (April 20).
For several years, the state of Connecticut has been debating this change to address the increasing trend of using the religious exemption to avoid complying with the required vaccine schedule. I am proud of those members of the southeastern Connecticut delegation who supported the bill in the House on April 19, including Rep. Kathleen McCarty who had opposed the bill in committee due to her concerns as ranking member on the Education Committee. She did the right thing for the children of this state.
Vaccine policy should have nothing to do with politics and everything to do with ensuring the public’s health. It is about protecting our children from deadly diseases like measles, meningitis, diphtheria, polio and more. The recent measles cases in our state should serve as a warning.
I am with The Day in hoping that Sen. Heather Somers will do the right thing and support the bill when it comes to the Senate, as well as Sen. Paul Formica. We have the tools to protect schoolchildren from these terrible diseases. We need to use them.
