Ten days was not enough recovery time for Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller, who was inactive for Sunday’s 17-10 win over Washington because of an ankle injury sustained Oct. 21 at Cleveland.
Miller missed all four days of practice during the week.
“Really not that close (to playing),” coach Vic Fangio said. “I thought on Tuesday or Wednesday, he would make it, but he never made enough progress to where he felt he could push off on it. I didn’t want to dress him and say, ‘Hey I can’t go,’ and we’re down a guy.”
Rookie Jonathon Cooper started opposite Malik Reed for the Broncos. Aaron Patrick and newcomer Stephen Weatherly were the rotational pass rushers.
Minus Miller, Reed had two sacks and Weatherly one sack.
McManus’ first miss. Broncos kicker Brandon McManus’ first field goal attempt of the season from at least 50 yards was also his first miss. The Broncos reached the Washington 29 before going backward and McManus was wide right from 53 yards to keep the score 10-10 with 10:57 remaining.
McManus had made his first 13 field goals.
Two more blocks. The Broncos kept the game scoreless early in the second quarter when Shelby Harris blocked Chris Blewitt’s 45-yard attempt and Dre’Mont Jones blocked Blewitt’s 47-yard attempt in the second half.
“Those guys up front do a great job,” Fangio said. “They take a lot of pride in it, (special teams coordinator) Tom (McMahon) studies it hard for them and it was huge.”
Injury updates. Left tackle Garett Bolles (ankle) and cornerback Bryce Callahan (knee) were unable to finish the game, replaced by Calvin Anderson and Nate Hairston, respectively.
Bolles was injured when a Washington defender fell onto the back of his leg on running back Melvin Gordon’s seven-yard touchdown run with 4:27 remaining.
Callahan stepped awkwardly while covering an incompletion to the end zone and his knee was hyperextended.
“I don’t think it’s that bad, but to the extent (of seriousness), I don’t know yet,” Fangio said.
New returners. Punt/kick returner Diontae Spencer was a healthy scratch for the first time this year, replaced on kickoffs by receiver Tyrie Cleveland and punts by receiver Kendall Hinton.
“The reason (for scratching Spencer) is because we were trying to get the best special teamer (active),” Fangio said. “We took a chance of really only dressing three inside linebackers that could play. It was a little bit of a roll of the dice, but that was the thinking behind it.”
Hinton needed to be dressed as the fourth receiver in case Jerry Jeudy (ankle) had an in-game setback.
