ATLANTA — The National League Championship Series started without Max Muncy on Saturday night.
“I’ve had better days,” Muncy said in the visitor’s dugout at Truist Park, a bulky brace still on his injured left elbow. “It’s one of those things where it’s still really painful. I’m trying to get through it, trying to see where we’re at. I’ve had better days.”
Muncy suffered the injury on the final day of the regular season. He dislocated his elbow and suffered “other damage” on which he and the Dodgers have declined to elaborate. Muncy was left off the roster for the wild-card game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the five-game NL Division Series against the San Francisco Giants and now the best-of-seven NLCS against the Atlanta Braves.
“Not playing has been one of the worst things I’ve ever had to experience,” Muncy said.
Muncy said he still has to wear the brace on his left arm “pretty much” all day and even sleeps in it. He would not specify what his “rehab” activities are, replying “No comment” with a smile when asked if he has tried to swing a bat.
“The range of motion has actually been pretty decent the last couple days,” Muncy said. “We’re able to get more movement in it than we thought. That’s where a lot of the optimism is coming from. It’s just one of those things where it’s not really close to normal and probably won’t be. If we’re able to play, it’ll be essentially gutting through.”
Muncy said there have been discussions with the medical staff about “can there be more damage done or can there not be” if he does try to play should the Dodgers reach the World Series.Muncy healing enough to play in a World Series scheduled to start in 10 days seems very much a longshot.
“I’m hoping it’s very realistic,” Muncy said.
“We’re talking to some doctors and trying to figure out exactly what the next steps will be.”
