Before the Rockets took a 3-pointer at the buzzer on Tuesday, they thought they might be going to the line for two free throws to tie the game with 5.5 seconds remaining.
They ran an inbounds play with Christian Wood in position to set a screen for Kevin Porter Jr., then slipping the screen when LeBron James switched to Porter. That sent Wood alone down the lane with Jae’Sean Tate’s inbounds pass finding him under the basket.
With a foul to give, the Lakers’ Kent Bazemore reached in and Avery Bradley came with a shove. After the whistle, Wood signaled that he should go to the line. Rockets coach Stephen Silas, though admitting he did not have a good angle, said he thought Wood was fouled in the act of shooting.
Officials, however, ruled that he was fouled on the catch, not the shot attempt. The NBA’s last two-minute report on Wednesday deemed that the call was correct that Bazemore fouled Wood on the floor, before Bradley on the shot.
