Well, kind of.
Monday was a turbulent day for the sport and a lot happened. Catch up on everything you need to know here:
There will be a season: According to MLB, anyway. Late Monday night, the league said in a statement that it would set a regular season with whatever number of games it chooses. It’s believed that there will be 60 games.
But there are catches: Before the Commissioner Rob Manfred finalizes anything, MLB asked the MLB Players Association to tell it two things. First, it wants to know if players would be able to report to their respective spring trainings by no later than July 1. Second, were players on board with the league’s coronavirus-related health and safety protocols?
Opening Day? It’s estimated that Opening Day could be sometime around July 24-26.
Universal DH: But only for this season, as of now. The 60-game proposal the owners made — and the players overwhelmingly rejected Monday — would have implemented a DH for both leagues in 2021, too. The idea is to not force pitchers to hit and expose them to greater risk of injury following the layoff and shortened spring training.
What about the postseason? Nothing new. The sides had talked about an expanded playoffs, but the possibility of that evaporated when the players rejected the owners’ proposal.
There will be a fight — in the courtroom: The players’ union is almost certain to file a grievance with an arbitrator, complaining that the owners didn’t negotiate in good faith. The owners will likely hit them with the same claim. It’s going to get even uglier than it’s been.
Remember: The threat of the coronavirus looms large over all of this. Last week, MLB had to close all training facilities after 40 players and staff tested positive for the virus. What’s going to happen when players start traveling from their homes to their spring training sites, and there are dozens of people inside stadiums? Will more positive tests ruin the season and render the players-owners battle moot?
