Democracy is hard, it is messy, it is vigorous debate. Democrats in Groton are finding that out. I am a long-time member of the Democrat Town Committee and a former RTM and Town Council member. I believe all of our current councilors and committee members have the best interests of the town at heart and as volunteers who keep our democracy alive. We need to thank them.
However, as volunteers, we sometime make mistakes. Not nominating Portia Bordelon for the council was a mistake. It is a mistake the Democrats in Groton can correct. Portia is “democracy in action.” She asks the hard questions and pushes for clear answers and is willing to admit when she makes a mistake. She is exactly what good democracy demands.
I intend to vote for Portia in the Tuesday primary. Although I support all of my fellow Democrats who are running − as I believe the ideals of the Democratic Party − and especially as we have seen Republicans do all they can to destroy our democracy since the time of Newt Gingrich.
In this primary I will vote only for Portia. That way my vote is nine times more powerful. Then vote for democracy in November.
