My letter to Representative Trahan: Remove Trump now!

Dear Representative Trahan: Yesterday President Trump directly incited a riot, causing a mob of his supporters to attack the U.S. Capitol building, the police defending it, and our elected representative within. Clearly delusional and unable to accept his November defeat, the president has attempted to foment an insurrection in order to retain power. This cannot stand. The U.S. Congress must act to defend our country. I call on you, as my representative in Congress to act decisively to remove President Trump immediately.

Let us be clear. As terrible as the events of yesterday were, the danger has not passed. Events of a cataclysmic nature are imminently possible in the days ahead. President Trump still holds enormous influence with a frighteningly large segment of the American population. We have seen his power to convince people of lies and move them to violence. Furthermore, this unhinged man can still exercise massive executive power, including command of the our military and, especially, the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Inconceivably, it is this sole control over nuclear weapons, literally the power to end humanity, that is his most “unquestionable” authority. If that does not scare you, nothing will.

There are three ways Donald Trump can be separated from the powers of the presidency — by provisions under the 25th Amendment, by impeachment and removal by Congress, and by (forced — it worked with Nixon) resignation. All three approaches must be pursued simultaneously. I implore you to take action now — there is not a moment to lose.

Thank you to Rep. Golden for Climate Bill

I would like to thank Rep. Golden for his hard work on the climate bill. It is a complicated issue to tackle which requires a lot of reading and listening. I appreciate him doing the homework. One of the pressing concerns on this subject is who will pay for it. I ask this myself as I read what the goals are and then I look at my own wallet. On one hand it has become beyond obvious that we must take drastic steps to tackle the climate challenge.

How to pay for it is less than clear. And then I remember that we’ve been in a similar spot before – the beginning of World War II during the Depression. There was absolutely no question that the Japanese and Nazis would feel our wrath — but at the time we didn’t have the military or arms or might to back up our desires. Yet somehow we figured out new ways of financing that were innovative and got the job done. I feel like with representatives who work as hard as Tom Golden we will be able to find a way forward in paying for what we need to see that our children and grandchildren have a livable climate.
