MAKANDA, Ill. (WSIL) -- After a week of bitterly-cold temperatures and snow, many may be ready to just take a break from it all this weekend, but Giant City State Park says with warmer weather ahead, now's the time to get outside and hit the trails.

Park visitors James Rass from Sydney, Australia, and Gina Workman from Chicago, were about to hike the "city streets" at the park Friday. They are in Southern Illinois taking a little tour of its outdoor offerings.

"We are at Giant City, so, checking this out then heading back, heading back home," says Workman, with Rass adding, "We heard there's some pretty phenomenal icicles so, we're looking forward to seeing some of them."

The two say the snow isn't a deterrent, it's part of what they're outdoors for, which Natural Resources Coordinator Jennifer Randolph-Bollinger says, is why folks should get outside and take advantage of its winter beauty while it last.

"The amount of snow that we have is something that we haven't seen in years, so now is a great time to come out and really enjoy it," says Randolph-Bollinger

She says the trails are open and the roads in-and-out of the park are all cleared. Those who venture out, should come prepared.

"The most important thing to remember is to dress appropriately," says Randolph-Bollinger. "Because it is still chilly out and the trails will still have snow on them, and when you're walking on snow you want to make sure you have really good footwear."

She recommends visitors dress in layers as the body warms after an active hike. And after all the hiking and taking in the scenes, the Giant City Lodge is a "great way" to end the day.

Lodge Manager Mikey Kelley agrees, saying, before leaving the park, "Think twice, come eat; you earned it on that hike, so may as well come get some comfort food as well."

The lodge offers a family-style chicken dinner with several sides and a relaxing atmosphere. Kelley, a life-long resident of the region, says the current snow coverage is not something visitors can count on each year, which is why the Park is encouraging families to get out this weekend and enjoy it.

"So it's just a really unique time to come to the park, really peaceful and quiet," says Randolph-Bollinger.
