FORT MYERS, Fla. — Last week Walmart told NBC2 their employees would schedule people for second doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in person.
But, we’re still hearing from some people in Southwest Florida who were sent away without those crucial appointments.
Most places giving out the vaccine will help you schedule the second dose. People who got their first dose from Walmart worry they may lose the chance to get full immunity from the virus.
“That creates quite a bit of anxiety,” William Hogue said.
Hogue and his wife drove to Lake City, Florida last week from Punta Gorda to get their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine after trying to land an appointment for weeks. Their confirmation message from Walmart said an employee would schedule their second dose appointment once they got the shot.
“We assumed that’s the way it would go,” Hogue said, “and that’s why we were willing to drive the four hours to Lake City.”
But that didn’t happen. Hogue said multiple employees told him and others in the waiting area that they have no plans to schedule people for second doses on site. Instead, they’d have to go through the online process again.
“The comment we got at the pharmacy was ‘Well… don’t believe everything you read on the internet,'” Hogue said.
Hogue and his wife got the Moderna vaccine at Walmart and now need to find out who will give them a shot of the same vaccine next month and where to go.
“My real concern is that sort of negates the first vaccination,” Hogue said. “It’s almost like wasting the first vaccine if you can’t come back and get the second vaccination.”
Walmart officials tell us they’ve contacted everyone waiting for their second dose to schedule an appointment. In the meantime, Walmart is working to re-educate their teams to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future.
