Ted Cruz's tweets about California blackouts look really dumb right now - Chron

Before Twitter existed, we could pretend our politicians, who although they clearly always have had their faults, were people who had empathy for their fellow citizens.

Twitter proved how wrong we were. Turns out, plenty of politicians are jerks who would much rather glibly hit send on a tweet that would allow their fellow jerks to have a dark laugh than show an ounce of compassion.

When California was hit with rolling blackouts in the summer, the office of the California governor, tweeted for Californians to do what they can to conserve energy to try to prevent disastrous state-wide power outages.

Sound familiar?

WHAT'S GOING ON?: Texas is in a power emergency, here's why

Instead of amplifying the tweet or offering thoughts and prayers or even just sitting this one out, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz thought it would be a perfect opportunity to mock United States citizens facing a crisis.

“California is now unable to perform even basic functions of civilization, like having reliable electricity. Biden/Harris/AOC want to make CA’s failed energy policy the standard nationwide. Hope you don’t like air conditioning!,” Cruz tweeted with condescension.

That tweet is doing nothing to keep warm the 4 million Texans currently without power, including 1.4 million in Cruz' hometown of Houston.

A couple months after mocking California, Cruz continued piling on, tweeting the Democrats' campaign slogan should be: "If you want to live without air conditioning—vote Democrat." When “Rescue Me” actor Steven Pasquale pointed out to Cruz that the real problem was climate change, Cruz turned it up a notch.

“Some angry Lefty actor thinks California is the only place that has Summer. It’s hot everywhere – try Texas every summertime – but the rest of the country doesn’t have such a dysfunctional state govt that you can’t turn the lights on or run A/C. That’s a policy failure of the Dems.”

Cruz certainly wasn’t alone in having a laugh at California’s misfortune.

After Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urged his constituents to conserve energy during the blackouts,  U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw of Houston found time to send a joke on Twitter: “Alexa, show me what happens when you let Democrats control energy policy.”

In 2019, Texas Sen. John Cornyn tweeted an article from the satirical site The Babylon Bee with the headline "Texas luring jobs away from California with the promises of electricity."

Hilarious, fellas. When you're done with your online stand-up comedy set, can you do something about Texas' electrical grid now?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
