The phrase “continuity” certainly comes into it when you consider LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron giving quarterback Max Johnson first-team snaps when LSU began spring practice.
But what is continuity?
To me, at the quarterback position, it would be putting your starting quarterback the reps.
In LSU’s case, that would be Myles Brennan, right?
Wrong, Orgeron gave Johnson first-team snaps at the start of spring practice. Johnson knew he was getting them, too.
But Brennan, who is coming back from a lower-body injury, isn’t necessarily getting the job right off the bat just because he was the favorite last year.
When we look at him and his film, he seems to get rattled easily and he gets stuck on one read easily. A “lost puppy” mentality comes into play when looking into the game against Mississippi State.
Brennan finished that game 27-of-46 for 345 yards with three touchdowns and two and looked to be off his game.
He sustained the injury against Missouri early on, and at first, TJ Finley got reins. But his up-and-down season allowed for the introduction of Johnson to the offense.
Johnson is still adapting to being a starting quarterback, especially considering that he was only a true freshman, but he is rising as a passer and his mobility is above impressive.
In his time at LSU, Johnson has completed 58.7% of his passes for 1,069 yards with eight touchdowns and just one interception. The quarterback who could pull off a hell of a spin move also had 199 yards rushing with two touchdowns over just five games in which he recorded stats.
He’s undefeated as a starting LSU quarterback, having helped earn a 37-34 upset win over Florida and a 53-48 win over Ole Miss to cap off the season.
Is Johnson Orgeron’s starting signal-caller of the future? It’s not exactly unplausible.
We’ll see what happens this spring and ahead of the fall.
