The COVID-19 shot was just great, and I really loved shopping at the pharmacy - The San Gabriel Valley Tribune

The shot was a non-event, but the shopping, well, that was another story. My COVID-19 shot, administered two weeks late because the vaccine was stuck in the Midwest snowstorm, was quick and painless. The friendly Rite-Aid pharmacist assured me he had the same shot with no ill effects. He laughed when I told him that my daughter had put together a vaccine preparedness kit for me.

Ginger ale for a delicate stomach, acetaminophen for pain and fever, Pepto-Bismol for nausea, bottled water to keep hydrated and a charming little book called “Age Doesn’t Matter Unless You’re a Cheese.” That is actually the only item I used from the kit.

“What now?” I asked the nice pharmacist after he shot me. I was prepared to hear I would have to sit for 15 minutes wondering if I would have any strange reactions. But he said that I should walk around the store for 15 minutes.

Really? Walk around the store — as in shop? I shot (pun intended) out of my chair before he could change his mind. My first stop was the Dollar Corner where I scored the last 3-pak of yellow kitchen sponges. I took great delight in being able to select the color myself rather than have a store shopper do it for me.

I was contemplating a sparkling silver fish on a stick for Lark kitty when Sara texted me from the parking lot.

“Mom, have you had the shot yet? You were supposed to text me.”

“Sorry I get distracted.”

“How do you feel?”

“Excited. My favorite lavender hand cream is on sale. And the pharmacist told me to shop for 15 minutes.”

“So, no problems with the shot?”

“Only that no one told me I could have shopped while I was waiting for it.”

I hadn’t been shopping since the quarantine started. I could have spent the day there.

As I pushed my shopping cart around the store, I reminded myself why I was there in the first place. A shot at normal again. Even if it’s new.
