Cam Newton’s one-year contract already proves the New England Patriots aren’t relying on him as the quarterback of the future.

There’s been speculation that Newton is a solid candidate to start for the Patriots in 2021, but hasn’t entirely secured the role. The Patriots went out in free agency and had an absolute field day, drawing in a myriad of players on extremely uncharacteristic contracts. New England signed tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry, while getting a top-tier pass-rusher in Matthew Judon.

The team is already far more talented than the group in 2020, but the question is once again posed — which quarterback is best fit to lead this group? Obviously Newton understands the offense and Bill Belichick’s commands, but the NFL draft still hasn’t unfolded — where the Patriots hold the No. 15 pick.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks discussed the draft and the possibility of the Patriots looking at guys like Justin Fields and Trey Lance on their ‘Move the Sticks’ podcast.

“I think the New England Patriots could be real aggressive,” Brooks said, transcribed by NESN. “We’ve seen the New England Patriots step outside their comfort zone as it relates to free agency. We saw them completely rebuild the roster with the number of signings and free agency. … I believe they’re about to go all in on an offensive makeover. The young quarterback is the final piece to the puzzle. And I think that quarterback will be an athletic quarterback.”

Jeremiah hopped in and talked about the possibility of drafting Fields.

“I keep an eye on somebody like Trey Lance or Justin Fields,” Jeremiah said. “Those are the two that would make sense for them to target. Hear a lot of rumors out there that they are really high on Justin Fields out of Ohio State. So, they’d have to (trade up) quite a ways to get Justin Fields.”

It would be a wild and unexpected move to trade up for Fields, but considering this offseason, anything is possible.
