Following another wild finish to a Utah Jazz-New Orleans Pelicans game on Monday night that the Jazz lost 129-124, Utah All-Star center Rudy Gobert was very unhappy with a loose ball foul that was called on him with 29.5 seconds to go and the Jazz down by a point after they had rallied in the closing minutes.
However, on Tuesday afternoon in the NBA’s daily Last Two Minute Report, in which each call in the final two minutes of close games is examined, the league determined that the call was correct.
After Utah All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell drove to the basket but missed a layup attempt, Gobert and Pelicans All-Star Zion Williamson battled for the rebound for a few seconds before the whistle came against Gobert.
In Tuesday’s report, the NBA wrote, “Gobert (UTA) jumps into Williamson (NOP) and moves through his space, affecting his ability to get to the rebound” as the reasoning for why the call was correct.
Said Gobert postgame: “We were one terrible call away from it being a one point game and getting a chance to win. We fought hard to come back in the game, you know, but we learn from it. We know that there’s a lot of things that we should have done earlier to not even be in this position.”
The report says there were no incorrect calls during the last two minutes of Monday’s game but that there were two incorrect noncalls. The first was a lane violation the league said should have been called on Jazz guard Mike Conley with 1:28 left, and the second was with a minute to go as New Orleans center Steven Adams stepped out of bounds as he gathered a loose ball but it was not determined a turnover.
