Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have called it quits again — and this time they say they mean it.
The celebrity super couple announced in a statement that their reconciliation attempts have failed and they’re splitting up once and for all.
“We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects,” the couple said in a joint statement to People and other outlets. “We wish the best for each other and one another’s children.”
The news doesn’t come as a total surprise, in that the 51-year-old Lopez has continued to be spotted without her $1.8 million engagement ring since March when the couple initially called off their two-year engagement. The couple quickly reconciled and said they were “working through things.” The former New York Yankee slugger, 45, even flew to the Dominican Republican to be with the singer and actress where she was working on the movie, “Shotgun Wedding.”
But it’s been reported that the couple’s romance had been “on the rocks” for some time and that they had hit a “rough patch” in their relationship, which began four years ago.
Rodriguez famously proposed marriage to Lopez in March 2019, and presented her with the big diamond ring, as they posed for sunset photos on a beach in the Bahamas. They twice called off wedding plans, saying they had to because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lopez has been married three times before and was famously (or infamously) engaged to Ben Affleck. Rodriguez has been married once before.
During their relationship, Lopez and Rodriguez liked to share affectionate photos, looking fit and fabulous together, posing on awards-show red carpets, swooning in romantic locations or relaxing in the glamorous confines of one of their multiple homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.of their happy blended family.
Their Instagram feeds often featured images of them with Lopez’s 13-year-old twins, Max and Emme, from her marriage to Marc Anthony, as well as his two daughters, Ella, 12, and Natasha, 16, with ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis.
But their outwardly Instagram-perfect romance also was dogged by rumors that Rodriguez had been unfaithful. News of their initial breakup in March followed rumors linking Rodriguez to Madison LeCroy, the star of the reality TV show “Southern Charm.”
Reports said Rodriguez had been FaceTiming with LeCroy. Representatives for Rodriguez issued a denial about any contact with LeCroy, saying, “He doesn’t know this woman.”
LeCroy told Page Six that she had Rodriguez had “never met up” but that they’d “spoken on the phone.” She went on to say that Rodriguez has “never physically cheated on his fiancée with me,” claiming that she has spoken with him “randomly, but not consistent.”
But, for Lopez, the issue of Rodriguez and other women goes back to 2017, when they were about four months into their relationship. News circulated that Lopez had hired a private investigator to confirm or debunk allegations that he is a serial cheater who was still seeing a former mistress.
“She’s heard the cheating rumors in the past and has never let it bother her,” a source told Us Weekly in March 2019, shortly after the couple shared the sunset beach photos of him proposing marriage during a Bahamas vacation.
“She trusts (Rodriguez) and his love,” the Us Weekly source said. “They are inseparable and together almost all of the time.”
But immediately after they announced their engagement an ex-Playboy Playmate told a U.K. tabloid that he has sending her racy text messages, begging her for “naughty videos” and a threesome with her and another woman.
Former Oakland A’s player Jose Canseco also launched a Twitter tirade against Rodriguez, his long-time baseball enemy, by claiming that A-Rod had been sleeping with his ex-wife Jessica Canseco.
But Jessica Canseco vehemently denied her ex-husband’s claim about her and Rodriguez a few days later.
In recent months, Lopez and Rodriguez had put on a united front at high-profile public events, with him accompanying her to President Joe Biden’s inauguration, where she sang “America the Beautiful.” They also attended the Super Bowl together.
