LA GRANGE, IL — From the pandemic's beginning, Cook County authorities have given the wrong numbers of cases for La Grange.
They lumped in cases from La Grange Highlands, an unincorporated area southwest of the village. That has given an inflated number for the community.
For its interactive coronavirus map, the Cook County Public Health Department includes municipal boundaries for La Grange, which do not include La Grange Highlands.
During a Village Board meeting in August 2020, Village President Mark Kuchler expressed frustration with the coronavirus case numbers for the village, which are reported weekly in Patch stories.
He said the village requested the health department include La Grange Highlands' population in the per capita number because La Grange's case total included the neighboring community. The department did so.
"Unfortunately, the author of the Patch articles has not included the population of La Grange Highlands, so his numbers are not accurate," Kuchler said. "Cook County was doing the same."
Patch got the numbers from the health department.
At the time, Kuchler said the village's finance director contacted the health department and got results.
"This has been corrected by the county, and their numbers going forward will reflect it," Kuchler said.
Since August 2020, Patch has noted in its stories that La Grange Highlands numbers were included.
But the department never stopped including La Grange Highlands cases in La Grange case totals without giving any indication it was doing so. This week, it finally ended the practice. As of Sunday, La Grange — and only La Grange — had an accumulated 1,928 confirmed coronavirus cases since the pandemic's beginning.
On Monday morning, a health department spokesman confirmed his agency removed La Grange Highlands and any other unincorporated areas from La Grange's total. The previous week's total was 2,625, but that included the other areas.
As of Sunday, La Grange had 118 coronavirus cases per thousand people since the pandemic's beginning. The figure compares to 96 in Darien, 109 in Hinsdale and DuPage County, 110 in La Grange Park, 111 in Elmhurst, 117 in Clarendon Hills and suburban Cook County, 121 in Western Springs and 123 in Burr Ridge.
According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of recorded coronavirus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 36. The latest deaths were Sept. 17, Sept. 14, May 24, May 22, May 14 and Feb. 13. All the local deaths have been those who were over 50, according to the medical examiner.
The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.4 percent. About a tenth of 1 percent of the local population has died from the virus.
