The Red Sox activated left-handed pitcher Darwinzon Hernandez on Thursday. He began the regular season on the 10-day injured list after missing most of training camp because of a positive COVID-19 test.

“He’ll either get in a couple innings tonight or tomorrow depending on how it goes,” Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said during a Zoom conference call Thursday. “And then we’ll just kind of try to build from there. It could be two (innings) the next time. It could be three (innings).”

The Red Sox eventually could use him as a starter, opener or super reliever to bridge the gap from the starter to the closer when leading or tied.

“I think it’s possible he could end up in a lot of different spots,” Roenicke said. “Sometimes you think of your length guys as just being the guy that pitches when you need innings to fill. You’re down in the game quite a bit and you just need the innings. But because Darwinzon can put up a lot of zeros, I don’t want to limit him to those types of games. If we go four or five innings with a starter, and we’re tied or we have a lead, and he’s pitching really well, there’s nothing wrong with coming in and throwing two, three innings there. Hopefully still giving your offense a chance to get some more runs. And those are really meaningful innings. So he’s not limited to what he can do. And really depends on how he pitches and where we see the best fit for him.”

Hernandez is a candidate to open games before being fully stretched out.

“I don’t want to say we’re going to do one or the other,” Roenicke said. “I think we’re going to look at what goes on. See where we think he can get out there and really succeed.”

Hernandez posted a 4.45 ERA in 29 outings (one start) as a 22-year-old rookie last year. He struck out 57 in 30 ⅓ innings, but he also walked 26 batters.

He allowed four runs (three earned) in 3 innings in his only career start vs. the Texas Rangers last June 11. He recorded a 3.95 ERA in 27 ⅓ innings of relief.

Roenicke stressed Hernandez typically will pitch the Red Sox leading or tied.

“We know if he goes length, it will be two or three days until he pitches again,” Roenicke said. “And if we extend him farther than that, if we go to three or four innings for him, then it will end up being three or four days that he’ll be off. But we’ll mix that up a little bit.”
