The cost of clean air: Can air purifiers really prevent COVID-19? - NBC2 News

When coronavirus hit Southwest Florida, people in our community bought different types of hand sanitizers, masks, and air purifiers.

“It’s out there, everybody is looking for it and it’s continual. Manufacturers are backed up with this stuff, but there’s a lot more business around the UV light air purification product, not so much the filter itself,” Mike Antonucci at Advanced Air said.

The question everyone has in mind is, could purifiers be another solution? Do they really work? Naples Community Hospital doctors believe that air purifiers can solve, or at least help mitigate some air quality concerns, especially with COVID-19.

“There are three kinds of air purifiers in the market, one is the HEPA which is a high efficiency. HEPA filters particularly trap the particles that are bigger than the size of those pores,” Dr. Shahrar Shahzeidi at NCH said.

An air purifier is a machine designed to remove contaminants from the air, making the air cleaner, and create a more breathable area.

“They’re actually killing off odors, the actual bacteria, they’re designed to kill that stuff off,” Antonucci said.

Most air purifiers work by using a filter to suck in and trap the contaminants, doctors at NCH said HEPA filters can trap 99.9 percent of the particles. Those particles can include dust or other forms of pollution.

When choosing where to place an air purifier Dr. Shahzeidi said it all depends on your space size and be sure to keep it out of the way of furniture, or tight corners.

“If the space is huge and then you have a small purifier, of course it’s not going to be effective. Precaution is the most important thing,” Dr. Shahzeidi said.

Air purifiers can range anywhere from $800 to $1,600 per unit.

“We just thought, here’s one simple step that we can do. I’m gonna wear a mask, I’ll wear a visor, socials distance, but is there anything else that we can do, and it seemed like a simple step. It adds an extra layer of precaution,” school teacher Patrick McCarthy said.

Doctors are warning against trying to make your own purifier at home because it could cause more harm than good.

“I wouldn’t recommend homemade filters. You might think it’s effective but it’s really not effective. When you want to change that HEPA filter, you have to know when to change it. Change that filter timely and make sure that you have to know particles are trapped in there because those filters are full of viruses,” said Dr. Shahzeidi.

If you’re interested in purchasing an air purifier, there are several options at Home Depot, Best Buy or at a local air conditioner company.
