President Donald Trump signed four executive orders on Saturday at his Bedminster golf club after Congressional talks stalled over a new corornavirus relief bill, including an order that would give an additional $400 in weekly unemployment benefits.
But workers are wondering if that’s really going to happen, and if it does, how long it will take New Jersey’s Department of Labor to program its computer systems to make the payouts.
And how is the state going to pay for it?
Unlike the initial $600 expanded benefits, the $400 from the president’s order will be a cost-share with states.
“I’m taking action to provide an additional or an extra $400 a week in expanded benefits,” the president said. “That’s generous but we want to take care of our people.”
The benefits would last through Dec. 27, 2020, and would cover eligible claimants from the week of ending Aug. 1, 2020, the president’s order said.

Trump said the federal government will cover 75% of the cost. So that means New Jersey will have to pay $100 of the $400 in additional payments to the unemployed.
Gov. Phil Murphy and the Labor Department didn’t immediately respond to requests about how much in payments the state will provide, how the agency will facilitate the payments and how long it may take.
The Labor Department has come under fire for its antiquated computer system. When it added new payment systems to its computers — for the expanded $600 benefits, for gig worker and self-employment benefits, known as Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), and for expanded federal and state unemployment benefits — workers said there was a lag, in many cases for weeks or longer.
And it wasn’t just New Jersey. When Congress decided on the $600 payments, it was in part because many state’s systems wouldn’t be able to process income-based benefits in a realistic time period.
