Free agency certainly didn't play out the way Dennis Schroder anticipated.
The veteran guard went into the offseason hoping to land a lucrative contract, but he had to settle for a one-year, $5.9 million deal with the Celtics. That final number was a far cry from the four-year, $84 million extension that the Lakers had reportedly offered to Schroder. His decision to reject that extension turned Schroder into a popular target of online jokes and memes, which he embraced earlier this month.

But what was the negotiation process between Schroder and Los Angeles' front office? Schroder addressed the questions surrounding his departure at Boston's media day.
"The Lakers told us we are not talking during the season, and at the end of the day, I never had that contract in front of me," Schroder told reporters on Monday. "That's one thing, but they wanted to talk, and at the end of the day, me and my agent decided not to sign that contract. At the end of the day, I feel like, for me personally, I gotta be comfortable in the environment I'm in. I love the Lakers organization, and they did great things. But I think, for me, and this is just business, I don't think I fit in 100 percent. You play with LeBron [James] and [Anthony Davis]. That's two of the best players in the NBA, and I don't think I gave them everything that I bring to the table."
"For me and my family, I signed a pretty good contract after my fourth year, and my family and myself, we're going to be good. I'm 28 years old, and I'll still play in the NBA for a long time. Money is not everything at all times. I want to be comfortable in a situation where I know people appreciate me. At the end of the day, that's it. All this stuff happened how it happened. You've just gotta look forward, just try to keep improving, try to show people what you're capable of. Then everything will come back."
This may just be an issue of semantics. Did the Lakers put the actual contract on the table and hand Schroder a pen? Maybe not, but there could have been an understanding between the two sides.
Regardless of what happened in LA, Schroder is now happy to be a member of the Celtics. If he has a strong 2021-22 season, Schroder could re-enter free agency next year and get the kind of deal that he expected to sign this past summer.
"I think Boston was just the right fit and the right mentality, how the organization works, the system," Schroder said. "It's a winning mentality that was just, for me, the right move to make. I hope that it's going to be for a long time."
