When Robert Saleh walked past the Jets’ wide receiver room earlier this week, he glanced in to put a name to the voices he heard from outside. It came as no surprise to see it was rookie Elijah Moore putting in extra work with wide receivers coach Miles Austin.
Moore, a second-round draft pick out of Ole Miss, said he felt more comfortable in Week 2 against the Patriots (four receptions for 47 yards) than he did in his NFL debut at Carolina (one catch for a loss of three yards). Week 1, he said, was an unexplainable feeling. Since then, he’s continued to study film and clean up his game.
“He is deliberate, and he wants to be great, he wants to be special and he demonstrates that every day,” Saleh said. “Now it’s just a matter of trusting what you do and take it to the football field on Sunday and go let it loose. I think it’s just a matter of time before that happens.”
Before the Jets home opener against the Patriots, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said he expected Moore to have a big year. In their talks after Carolina, LaFleur explained to Moore his performance had to happen and to keep moving. It was all the confidence Moore said he needed to hear.
A dominant force at Ole Miss, Moore set a program-record 86 receptions for 1,193 yards and eight touchdowns in his last season. He led the country in receiving yards (149.1) and receptions per game (10.8). When asked how he’ll handle sharing more of the workload now that he’s in the NFL, Moore said it’s about making the most of his opportunities.
“If you get two catches, then it’s two catches thinking touchdown. It’s all a mindset,” he said. “Pretty much how I am going to attack.”
And according to Moore, he’s not the only one putting in the extra hours of watching film to clean up their game.
“I feel that is everybody in the building. We wall want to be legendary. We all say it. We are trying to switch the program around and become something that everyone remembers,” Moore said. “It definitely takes more than being here in regular hours. Seeing what we did wrong, fix it so it doesn’t happen again. I promise you, if we make a mistake once, it won’t happen again.”
