Sam Pittman believes Arkansas can correct mistakes - 247Sports

Whether they win or lose, there are always corrections that need to be made after a game for any football team. During parts of the first half against Rice, it seemed like Arkansas couldn’t run a play on offense without having a miscue. After going back and watching the film, Razorback head coach Sam Pittman knows what he and his team need to do to get better this week.

There’s always room for improvement, even in games that go according to plan. Pittman knows his team can play better, but he is not discouraged by the opportunity to improve.

“That’s just football,” Pittman said. “When we beat Mississippi State last year and when we beat Tennessee, there was a list of problems we had to fix. That’s just how it is. There’s just a lot of things that need to be fixed. The kids need to get better, the coaches need to get better and I have to get better.”

Not all mistakes are created equal either. Some are more correctable than others, and some can stem from deeper problems within a football team. Pittman believes that his team played hard on Saturday and can build on what they did.

“We didn’t have an effort problem,” Pittman said. “We played hard, we just didn’t play well at times. You’re never going to play a perfect game, so there were a lot of mistakes made — probably less than I thought, to be honest with you.”

It’s no secret that Arkansas will be in for a tougher challenge this week with the Texas Longhorns in town. A slow start will not be as easy to overcome against the Longhorns, and the Razorbacks know that.

In a game of inches, the difference between a good team and a bad team can be minuscule. Pittman is confident that his team can improve on their mistakes from Saturday’s game against Rice.

“I’m certainly not going to sit here and apologize about anything,” Pittman said. “We won 38-17. We can certainly get a lot better, and I can be a better coach, and that’s what will happen.

“I think you always find out when there's a cumulation of bad things going on, you're feeling like, 'Man, we weren't ready. We weren't this.' But if you break it down, those things are simple fixes that should have already been taken care of.”

Pittman is in no way overlooking the areas his team needs to work on this week. But sometimes you can learn more about your team when they deal with adversity.

There’s no doubt the Razorbacks will have to play a better game this week if they want to win. Whether or not they can do that remains to be seen, but Pittman believes his football team will continue to work and get better regardless of what they accomplish.

“You got three and a half hours to play your best ball, and sometimes you don’t,” Pittman said. “We can be all gloom and doom all we want, but the bottom line is if we would've won 45-7 or we'd lost, come tomorrow we were going to watch the tape and come Monday we’d go correct those mistakes. We're going to love our kids and we're going to get them to play better. And we're going to coach better.”
