Don’t text while listening to Drake’s new album.
“Certified Lover Boy,” which dropped Friday, Sept. 3, is chock-full of the next sad, lovesick boy anthems.
Coming just in time for cuffing season as fall creeps closer, Drake’s newest drop is making fans feel all the feelings.
And in case anyone was looking for an excuse to text their ex, “Certified Lover Boy” is definitely it.
Fans quickly took to TikTok to share snippets of the songs — and to warn their contact list that they might be sending some emotionally vulnerable texts this weekend.
“My inner drizzy getting ready to drunk text every ex that’s not really my ex this weekend,” posted one person online.
“Stop using Drake’s album as an excuse to text that mf,” added another user, Hayley, looking out for the girls trapped in Drake’s lyrical genius.
“Certified Lover Boy,” via OVO Sound/Republic Records, is the 34-year-old artist’s first full-length album since his 2018 release “Scorpion” and his sixth overall. During his album-drop hiatus, he’s released singles and has been featured on other tracks sporadically over the past three years. But fans were more than ready for a whole album featuring Drake’s brilliantly thought-through lyrics, preparing for the inevitable sad-boy hours.
“Can’t wait for Drake to tell me how I’ve been feeling,” tweeted a fan.
“Drake has blessed us on a Friday with album of the year,” wrote another on Twitter.
“Certified Lover Boy” features 21 songs with a slew of impressive cameos.
“I’ve been losing friends and finding peace, honestly that sounds like a fair trade to me,” raps Drake on the song “Fair Trade,” which features Travis Scott.
“Love All” includes a verse from Jay-Z, while Lil Wayne and Rick Ross team up on “You Only Live Twice.” Meanwhile, “Way 2 Sexy” taps the duo of Young Thug and Future, while 21 Savage, Tems, Lil Baby, Giveon, Ty Dolla $ign and Kid Cudi are also included on the star-studded, lengthy track list. And, according to Pitchfork and other sources, Nicki Minaj reportedly made an uncredited, potty-mouthed, spoken-word cameo in the cut “Papi’s Home.”
The Canadian rapper also gives nods to some acclaimed figures in his lyrics, paying homage to Milwaukee Bucks player Giannis Antetokounmpo in “7am On Bridle Path,” as well as name-dropping Ayesha Curry, wife of NBA star Steph Curry, on “Race My Mind.”
But even Drake isn’t exempt from criticism, despite widespread love from his fans.
His album art, which features 12 pregnant women emojis of different skin tones, elicited strong emotions from some critics who called it “ugly” and “offensive.” (Even Lil Nas X trolled him about it to promote his own upcoming album, “Montero.”)
The critiques didn’t stop there — the song “TSU” lists disgraced rapper and accused sex trafficker R. Kelly as a lyrical contributor, right next to Justin Timberlake. The morning of the album’s release, he already faced backlash on Twitter.
“The fact that we are talking about an R. Kelly sample on Drake’s album in 2021 is all you need to know about how these artists still don’t care,” journalist Ernest Owens wrote on social media.
Despite the controversial hiccups surrounding the album, fans apparently are still enamored with the rapper’s lovesick songs about his latest romantic interests, inspiring listeners to miss their ex, text someone they shouldn’t — or just wallow in their emotions.
Hold on, they’re going home to get in their feelings.
