Grégoire Saucy was delighted to get back to winning ways in race one of the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine weekend at the Circuit Paul Ricard on Saturday, with the Swiss driver comfortably leading from start to finish.
The ART Grand Prix driver had dominated Qualifying on Saturday morning, taking pole position by almost four-tenths of a second, and he converted his spot at the front of the field into the lead at the start.
After there, despite two safety cars either end of the race, Saucy was untouchable and had built a comfortable gap to the chasing Hadrien David when the race was neutralised late in the day after a collision between G4 Racing team-mates Axel Gnos and Alessandro Famularo.
Just a week ago, Saucy had struggled around the Circuit de Monaco and failed to score points in either race, so to comeback in such a dominant fashion was perfect for the twenty-one-year-old.
“Really happy for the win,” said Saucy, who now has four wins in the opening seven races of 2021. “I like the track and all was perfect.
“We will continue to work and improve, but we are there where we want and my pace was really good along the entire race.”
R-ace GP driver David admitted there was nothing he could do to deny Saucy the victory, and all he was doing was focusing on avoiding mistakes to ensure he took his best finish of the season in second.
“These are good points, but there was really nothing I could do from P2 to overtake Grégoire,” said David. “We need to work on the car and for QP2, as we need to start at the front to win the race.”
