Kate Hudson Calls Matthew McConaughey’s Potential Run for Texas Governor “Really Shocking” - Vanity Fair

The actress only just found out about her rom-com costar’s political aspirations.

Kate Hudson was as surprised as the rest of America to discover that her How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days costar, Matthew McConaughey, has some pretty serious political aspirations.

During an appearance on an episode of Rob Lowe’s Literally! podcast released on Wednesday, Lowe broke the gubernatorial news to Hudson when he asked if she would help McConaughey “with his campaign for governor of Texas if he so decides to run?” The actress seemed to be rendered speechless by this revelation as Lowe added, “That was a long pause. Can I just say, for the record, that was a very long pause.” When Hudson was finally able to regain her composure, she replied, “Sorry, hold on. Let me just take a sip of my [drink]. I have not heard this. This is the first I’m hearing of McConaughey getting into politics.”

“He’s a really interesting guy,” she continued. “I, honestly, if he does want to get into politics, I believe that Matthew, you probably wouldn’t get a politician who would care as much as he does, you know? I think he’s very authentic in how much heart, um, but the governor of Texas is a big job. I mean, is that what we’re talking about? The governor of Texas?...Oh, wow.” Lowe joked that, “If he doesn’t use ‘Alright, alright, alright’ as a bumper sticker, then everybody on that staff needs to be fired!” The actress laughed, adding, “I think he’d encourage that. But I actually feel like he’d have a real chance.”

After casually contemplating a run for governor in multiple interviews while promoting his memoir, in March, McConaughey admitted he was starting to take the idea of running pretty seriously. “I’m not teasing the idea or anything,” he told CNBC. “I’m actually trying to look at the idea and give it serious consideration. I have a new chapter for myself, personally in my life. I believe it is in some sort of leadership role.” But while he knows the general direction his career is headed, he added. “I don’t know what that role is. I don’t know my category. We’ve been talking about the ‘why’ of leadership and even, I would say, we need some more good leaders. And I’m not just talking about me. I’m talking about you out there, everyone out there, we need leadership.”

As for what the platform of a Governor McConaughey might entail, that remains unclear as The Texas Tribune reported that he “hasn’t voted in a primary since at least 2012 and has never donated to a Texas or federal campaign.” However, while chatting with Russell Brand on his podcast Under the Skin, the actor did give a sneak peek at his personal politics, making the case for being “aggressively centrist” and blaming the “illiberal left” for our country’s current political divide.
