LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT)- Mayo Clinic Health System experts are trying to stop misinformation and misperceptions from being spread about the COVID 19 pandemic.
During an online forum, Dr. Gregory Poland used his data and expertise to set the facts straight.
Poland, the director of Mayo’s Vaccine Research, has been a member of every federal committee involved in vaccine decision-making.
His presentation covered a lot of issues, including how COVID-19 affects kids.
COVID-19 cases among children and adolescents are increasing fast, making up 27% of all new COVID-19 cases last week, he said.
“It’s been characterized in children as this is happening quickly, and they get sick fast. There’s been … a significant increase in fact it is now exponential in the number of children and adolescents who have been hospitalized,” Poland said.
Last week, nearly 2,400 children and adolescents in the United States were hospitalized with COVID-19.
Poland said relief may be on the way, and he expects the Food and Drug Administration to grant an emergency use authorization for young children by the end of September.
“They will consider and likely grant a EUA for the Pfizer vaccine hopefully by the end of this month in kids down to age 5,” said Poland, who said he believes parents should get their children vaccinated.
Masking children in school also will help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and help reduce the chances the virus can mutate, he said.
“When you’re in the midst of a pandemic, the larger number of people you allow to get infected, you drive mutational pressure for worse and worse variants,” said Poland.
Poland says when viruses mutate, vaccines and medicines don’t work as well as they were intended.
