Giants really want to trade kicker Ryan Santoso - New York Post

CLEVELAND — For sale.

This is what the Giants want to make known about Ryan Santoso, the No. 2 kicker, meaning there is no place for him when the final roster cutdown is completed.

And so, they would love to trade him for a draft pick.

The Giants believe Santoso, who was on their practice squad in 2020, is one of the best 32 kickers in the world right now, which is why they also believe he can be the placekicker for an NFL team — just not the Giants, who have veteran Graham Gano locked up for another three years. Santoso re-signed with the Giants because they promised to give him every opportunity to showcase his talent and vowed to do all they could to find him a job opportunity. If they can trade him, all the better, and the Giants have fielded calls about Santoso.

In Sunday’s 17-13 preseason loss to the Browns, Santoso hit his only extra-point attempt and had touchbacks on all three of his kickoffs.

“We wanted to get Santoso some kicks,’’ head coach Joe Judge said. “This guy has had a tremendous camp for us, we wanted to make sure we rewarded him and got him out there to have some kicks. We’re happy to have Graham, he’s a phenomenal kicker. If we didn’t have Graham, this guy would be our kicker. I have a lot of faith in him.’’

Giants owner John Mara chatted with Browns WR Odell Beckham Jr. prior to the game on the sideline. Mara, of course, signed off on the mega-trade of the talented but polarizing Beckham, the Giants’ 2014 fourth-round draft pick. … Remember the “fight’’ post-practice between Sterling Shepard and Browns CB Troy Hill? Apparently there were no lingering hard feelings. They embraced after the game.

Judge would not disclose if there was any disciplinary action against Shepard; there likely was something minimal.

Second-year safety Xavier McKinney played one series for a specific reason. The coaching staff wanted him to get an opportunity to make the defensive calls — which he cannot do when veteran Logan Ryan is on the field. … Rookie LB Azeez Ojulari had a “nick’’ in practice this past week, Judge said, which is why he was kept out of the game. Judge said Ojulari will be ready this week.

OLB Cam Brown continues to excel on special teams. He had two tackles as a gunner on the punt cover team. … Trent Harris, showing positive signs this summer as an outside linebacker, was used in the second half on the inside, as the coaching staff continues to juggle the personnel.

CB Sam Beal, trying to stick around — a spot on the practice squad is the best he can hope for — did not have a strong showing.

Rookie CB Rodarius Williams was not the only member of his family to start in this game. His younger brother, Greedy Williams, started at cornerback for the Browns. … CB Jarren Williams was waived with an injury settlement.
