The Rams’ roster looks like one of the best in the NFL from top to bottom, featuring stars such as Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey, as well as underrated players like Darious Williams and Sebastian Joseph-Day. The depth they have at several positions is impressive, but that will create some difficult decisions when it comes time to final roster cuts next week.

The secondary is especially deep, even after losing Troy Hill and John Johnson in free agency. Everyone knows Ramsey, Williams and Jordan Fuller, but lesser-known guys such as J.R. Reed and JuJu Hughes have caught the eye of Sean McVay.

The same goes for Dont’e Deayon, Brontae Harris and Taylor Rapp. It may not be the most proven secondary in the league, but there are playmakers throughout this group and McVay knows the Rams will have to cut some really good players.

“It’s good to get (Dont’e Deayon) Double D back out here and playing because he’s done a really nice job. I think when you look at the corner spot, the depth behind Jalen, what Darious has done, I’ve really been pleased with David Long. Robert Rochell is really stepping up. But then you even see what an unbelievable play by Brontae Harris last week,” McVay said this week. “Getting Dont’e Deayon back out here, he’s such an instinctual player and you’re always hearing him out here, but he’s got a zest for life that you can’t help but love being around. And then the safety position, Jordan Fuller has really taken it and run with it and Taylor Rapp, I think those two guys have done such a nice job. Can see Burgess is still getting comfortable getting back from the injury. I’ve been really pleased with J.R. Reed, you look at JuJu Hughes, these guys have done a lot of really good things. They’re making us some difficult decisions and not to mention Nick Scott’s going to be coming back pretty soon. I think he’s done an outstanding job. If he can pick up where he left off. So, the depth of those rooms, at the corner and the safety positions, is exciting for us. There’s definitely going to be some really tough decisions.”

Reed and Hughes should be among the guys who are closest to making the team as far as bubble players go, standing out in a big way during the preseason. But Harris also had an interception against the Raiders and Deayon is a favorite of McVay’s.

Depending on how deep the Rams want to go in the secondary, they could choose to only keep only nine or 10 defensive backs. Most of them are locked in – Ramsey, Williams, Long, Rochell, Fuller, Rapp, Burgess, Scott – but there’s some wiggle room for guys like Reed, Harris, Deayon and Hughes, among others.
