Pittsburgh Pirates: Adam Frazier Was Traded at the Correct Time - Rum Bunter

The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Adam Frazier days before the trade deadline, but it now looks like they dealt him at the right time.

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a deal with the San Diego Padres to send infielder Adam Frazier to the Friars for a three-player player package. We all knew that Frazier was playing way over his head when the Pirates traded him, and it’s starting to show. It now looks like the Pirates traded Frazier at the right time.

Before the trade, Frazier was putting up pretty decent numbers. He was hitting .324/.388/.448 with a .364 wOBA, and 128 wRC+. Like I said earlier, he was playing over his head. Frazier had a .359 batting average on balls in play compared to his career average of .301. He never had a BAbip that reached .310 in at least 300 plate appearances. Though he was hitting more line drives, there was no massive increase in his hard-hit rate, exit velocity, or changes to his tendencies to pull/push/go up the middle.

Now leading up to the trade, Frazier already started to show signs of regression. His 110 plate appearances (1 month’s worth) leading up to the trade, he was hitting just .307/.364/.366 with a .321 wOBA, and 101 wRC+. Now a pretty batting average and solid on-base percentage, but pretty much what most were expecting from him. A league average, contact first hitter.

Though he’s continued this decline. Since the beginning of July, he’s only batting .275/.322/.325 with a .286 wOBA, and 79 wRC+. Again, he’s putting up a solid average, but his OBP has fallen to roughly league average. Any power he showed early in the season looks completely zapped. 84.1% of his hits have been just singles. He hasn’t hit that many doubles (only 6) and his last home run came on the 24th of June.

Going back to the start of June, it’s again, pretty much what everyone was expecting of Frazier. He’s hitting .291/.353/.380 with a .323 wOBA, and 102 wRC+. He’s been a slightly above league average hitter for a little over half the season. Mainly hitting for contact and putting up a good on-base percentage, but not much power. Pretty similar numbers to his 2016-2020 numbers.

Over the last month, we’re looking at a fairly poor hitter. He’s only hitting .235/.286/.286 with a .256 wOBA, and 60 wRC+. Among all qualified batters, he’s the 15th worst in this time frame. Now it is only 106 plate appearances, but it’s still been a pretty poor stretch of games for Frazier.

Since arriving in a Padre uniform he’s batting a lowly .238/.282/.288 with a .255 wOBA, and 59 wRC+. Not only is he not hitting for any average or getting on base at a playable rate, but he has shown zero power. He’s had just 3 extra-base hits. Aside from a

While this isn’t to say that Frazier has no value as a singles hitter, teams don’t value those kinds of players, maybe a little too little. But regardless, he’s been much less productive over the last month-plus compared to early in the season. The Pittsburgh Pirates traded Frazier when he had a 128 wRC+, .364 wOBA, and .836 OPS. Since June, he has just a 102 wRC+, .323 wOBA, and .733 OPS. The ladder numbers looking a lot like what he did in 2016-2020 (100 wRC+, .323 wOBA, .749 OPS). Even if you take out the shortened 2020 season, it comes out to about the same with a 102 wRC+, .327 wOBA, and .762 OPS.

Considering his steep decline over the past month-plus, the team made the right choice to deal Frazier when they did. Frazier has been known to do this as well, having a good half-season, then struggling in the other half. Had the Pittsburgh Pirates waited and dealt him this offseason, they may not have gotten nearly as good of a package as they did. Not to mention he’d have less contract control left as well. Meanwhile, Tucupcita Marcano has gotten nothing but positive reviews and praise from scouts for his contact-hitting ability, hand-eye coordination, and outstanding plate discipline. Jack Suwinski is a sneaky athletic outfield slugger. While Michell Milano is more of a work in progress, he’s not the worst third piece of a trade.
