So far, drivers haven’t been impressed. Despite massive subsidies, EVs hold only 3% of the global market.
One fundamental obstacle is that it takes hours to recharge an EV vs. a few minutes at the gas pump to fill a traditional car’s fuel tank.
The rationale for pushing EVs was to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. But there’s growing evidence that when you factor in the emissions created by mining the minerals and manufacturing the parts for putting together an electric vehicle, especially the battery, this may not be the case.
There’s no need to despair. Very impressive progress is already being made on making internal-combustion engines that are 50% more fuel-efficient.
